Description

3 celli. Bernhard Romberg lived from 1762 to 1841. His original title for this set was “Three Trios of Progressive Difficulty for [Solo] Cello, Viola and Cello. Op. 38.” They were written in the early 1820s, and published in 1826. Editions also exist for cello and piano.

Sonata/Trio in E Minor, Op. 38, No. 1, the least difficult of the three, was arranged for 3 celli and published by Schott in 2017. I’ve completed the set with these arrangements of numbers 2 and 3. Cello 1 is the original solo part, “Violoncello Principale”, cello 2 is the original viola part, and cello 3 the original “basso” cello part.

Sonata/Trio in B-flat Major, Op. 38, No. 3 is in 3 movements; the first is a sonata form, the second is marked Andante, and the third is titled Alla Polacca and is a spirited rondo. Cello 1 is difficult, cello 2 is intermediate to difficult with passages in tenor and treble clef, and cello 3 is easy. A performance idea is an advanced student on cello 1, the teacher on cello 2 and another student on cello 3.
